Animated Horror Short ‘Melted’ Short Review (2020) Delightfully Dark And Spooky

I quite possibly just watched one of my favorite things to come out of 2020. Melted is a delightufly spooky suprise that will put a smile on your face.

melted

This amazing animated short horror film was produced at Ringling College of Art and Design by Nikki Chapman, music by Neil Carmichael, and voiced by Shelby Lewis.

Synopsis for Melted

This CG animated film depicts a macabre girl lamenting about the inevitability of death after getting a melting cartoon character popsicle.

Melted starts out pretty innocently. A young girl s excited about getting some ice cream until she looks at the face of the melting cartoon character popsicle. Then, things take a turn for the dark and disturbing. She realizes a connection between herself and the frozen treat, that their fates are both hopeless and they will both cease to exist at some point. She bursts into a lovely macabre poem about this connection … but once she gets a taste of that creamy treat, all bets are off.

This short proves how talented Nikki Chapman is and that we can expect great things from her in the future. It’s the perfect short with just the right amount of darkness and humor. Neil’s music makes Melted’s stand out even more so and really drives home that macabre tone and atmosphere, with Shelby’s voice making it all the more perfect.

It comes at no surprise that Melted has already won Best Animated Short at Hollywood Horrorfest and was selected for Horrible Imaginings Film Festival and American Horror Film Festival. I hope that it continues to get more festival recognition and love from critics and fans alike. I would love to see more animated horror shorts like this in the future and even in anthology would be great!
