No Cage, More Danger And More Blood: ’47 Meters Down: Uncaged’ (2019) Movie Review

With the season coming to an end, I had to end it with a good, old fashioned summer movie, and I chose to watch 47 Meters Down: Uncaged, originally titled 48 Meters Down or 47 Meters Down: The Next Chapter. The first film (read our review here) was okay, but nothing really jumped out. There were no jump scares or bloody attacks. It was mostly about the two girls being chased by sharks. The sequel delivers with suspense and the ultimate terror of being trapped underwater. Let’s jump in the water as we review 47 Meters Down: Uncaged.

Synopsis:

Four teen girls (Sophie Nélisse, Corinne Foxx, Brianne Tju & Sistine Rose Stallone) diving in a ruined underwater city quickly learn they’ve entered the territory of the deadliest shark species in the claustrophobic labyrinth of submerged caves.

Review:

The character relationships are set up pretty fast in the film. Mia (Sophie Nélisse: The Book Thief 2013) and Sasha (Corinne Foxx: Beat Shazam 2018) are stepsisters. Mia is the outcast who is bullied by the popular girls. Sasha is the more popular sister who tries to avoid her stepsister at all costs. The father (John Corbett: Northern Exposure TV series) of the family is some kind of archaeologist or cave explorer. He tries to force the two girls together by going on a glass-bottom boat ride to see great white sharks, but Mia and Sasha ditch the boat to go diving with two other friends in a Mayan underwater city instead. What could possibly go wrong?

Exploring some underground Mayan caves. What could go wrong?

It’s not long after they begin their dive that two ancient Great White Sharks chase the four girls through the Mayan caves. The girls traverse the caves trying to escape the sharks, but it ends up collapsing on their way out. The girls scream in terror while being chased all while losing oxygen. I wanted to yell at them, “Stop screaming, bitches! You’re wasting your air!” but my plea was unheard. As the movie progressed, I had hope that the four girls would escape unscathed, but I was completely wrong.

47 Meters Down: Uncaged is 89 minutes long. It doesn’t waste time on exposition and gets straight into the action. The tension builds as the first attack happens. As the viewer, I was always expecting more attacks, but sometimes, I couldn’t anticipate all the jumps scares. The CGI sharks were very believable, but at times, looked like the shark from Little Mermaid just chomping away. The tension and jump scares were what kept me on the edge of my seat.

Escape: Resistance is futile to sharks

Final Thoughts:

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed Filmmaker Johannes Roberts’ film. It is certainly no Jaws, but it was better than Sharknado. If you like shark movies as much as I do, then you will enjoy 47 Meters Down: Uncaged. It had more danger and more blood than in the first film. The film is currently in theaters nationwide.
