‘Thelma’ (2017) Review – Captivating and Tragically Grim

Everyone always thinks it would be so cool to have superpowers. To do the impossible. But what if you couldn’t control it? In the new thriller, Thelma, the main character discovers a hidden truth about herself that will change her life forever.

Thelma was directed by Joachim Trier and was co-written by himself and Eskil Vogt. The film stars Eili Harboe, Kaya Wilkins, Henrik Rafaelsen, and Ellen Dorrit Petersen. It had its world premiere at TIFF and received wonderful feedback.

Official Synopsis:

Thelma, a shy young student, has just left her religious family in a small town on the west coast of Norway to study at a university in Oslo. While at the library one day, she experiences a violent, unexpected seizure. Soon after, she finds herself intensely drawn toward Anja, a beautiful young student who reciprocates Thelma’s powerful attraction. As the semester continues, Thelma becomes increasingly overwhelmed by her intense feelings for Anja – feelings she doesn’t dare acknowledge, even to herself –while at the same time experiencing even more extreme seizures. As it becomes clearer that the seizures are a symptom of inexplicable, often dangerous, supernatural abilities, Thelma is confronted with tragic secrets of her past, and the terrifying implications of her powers.

I absolutely loved this film. It was beautifully shot and captivating from beginning to end. In many ways, Thelma’s story reminded me a lot of Stephen King’s Carrie and the struggles she went through. This is a new age version of that 1976 film plus more.

Eili Harboe delivered a phenomenal performance as Thelma. As a viewer, you could feel her fear radiating from her body as she slowly began to lose control. Her journey is a terrifying one as she discovers new secrets about herself as well as embracing a new love. It was heartbreaking to see her struggle with these feelings and her faith.

Thelma starts out slow, but the intensity builds throughout the film. As more secrets unfold, the anticipation grows stronger and I couldn’t wait to see what would happen next. It’s like when you can’t wait to flip through the pages of a new favorite book. Also, the ending will leave you speechless and full of questions.

Final Thoughts:

Thelma is a shockingly beautiful film that I loved from beginning to end. I can’t wait to see more from Joachim Trier in the future and he knows how to deliver a story that will remain with you long after the credits roll. Thelma will be opening theatrically in Los Angeles on November 24th, so be sure to check it out!
