PopHorror Let's Get Scared
I always enjoy a comedy horror, aside from the Scary Movie franchise. However, one movie that started to show me that zombies can be funny, like really funny. Return of the Living Dead II became one of my safety resources when life gets a little complicated. I believe everyone should laugh at least once a day, just like I did all those years ago. I have a little pull after being a horror fan for almost 40 years.
Let’s get into the review.
Synopsis
The Trioxin barrels are at it again, this time targeting a suburban housing development. As the night progresses they learn how scary life can be as they race around town to survive or find help; even when zombies can have a little humor.
Nostalgia and a Happy Place
What makes the movie so special is the time I spent with my cousin. We spent hours and hours watching this film along with the first movie. I hold a lot of memories that make me laugh a little. Even when my mind starts to wander on all of the “could’ve been.” Even from the beginning, I am completely entrapped. I find myself quoting all of my favorite parts, which doesn’t make my wife very happy. However, she deals with it, even as a horror-movie hater. I owe her a lot for keeping this up.
Sometimes, though, I catch that little laugh under her breath.
The Rundown
The film is the last of the Living Dead franchise and was absolutely terrible, and that’s no lie. Return of the Living Dead II brought its A-game. It is a perfect mix between “This is terrifying” and “How did they come up with this?” The mood never really fades because the film is as perfect as the first. As a last hurrah before I left my hometown forever, Southern California is a mecca of pop culture fans. This film always comes up in conversations. Return of the Living Dead II didn’t need an explanation. It was the Resident Evil movies, which are completely boring, another thing I won’t lie about either.
The film has the perfect setting for what would happen outside of the town. Although you would expect to see zombies running wild, instead they show up at the most inconvenient time; I like the element of surprise, waiting for those moments I can’t get over still to this day. Zombies with a screwdriver shoved into their heads, or getting stepped on as the zombies rise from their graves, that is one of the funniest moments in the film world. It’s a perfect storyline because we already witnessed talking zombies in the first film. In Return of the Living Dead II, what we really wanted was for zombies to be able to say funny things.
The jokes write themselves in this situation, as if you see things coming but have no clue about the importance of the dialogue between humans and zombies. The film even brings the pair of infected friends from the first film, which is so genius and worked so well. Even went, “I think we’ve been here before, you, us, me, and them,” only without the heart-wrecking scene from the first film. There is somehow, convincing your girlfriend to let you eat her brains without a fight, true love if you ask me.
In The End
In the end, I cannot believe I have not written an article based on the gem of a film before now. The movie brings so much nostalgia to my life experiences. I have something to bring a smile even when I am in crisis mode. This film helped raise me and all my funny quotes besides The Simpsons. I will never forget the zombies rising scene; I always laugh like I did all of those years ago.
