‘LOWLIFES’ (2024) – Movie Review

There are not too many movies that can both make me cringe and leave me wondering at the same time. Lowlifes is one of those movies. Released in April, 2024, the Tubi Original is gaining steam in the horror community. I’m not too fond of most Tubi Originals, though I am all about B movies. For me, Tubi just doesn’t hit. Enough about Tubi  

Lowlifes is a wild ride of ups and downs and will have you on the edge of your seat, nonstop. Some things may be easy to figure out, but maybe not. I found the movie very well-written. It always keeps you guessing and pulls you right into the story.

Sypnosis

While taking a vacation through rural America, a family gets put to the test. The father of the traveling family, Keith (Matthew Macaull, Midway 2019) shows his true colors almost immediately. Two locals, Vern (Richard Harmon, I Still See You 2018) and Billy (Ben Sullivan, Jackals 2017), pay an unwelcome visit while searching for a missing friend. When Keith warily agrees to give one of the men a ride home after their truck breaks down.

The family makes it to Billy’s while visiting, the family decides to spend the night. It becomes a fight for survival as they are locked in the home together all night with killers on the loose. Both families struggle to make it through the night as chaos ensues. Who will make it through the night?

Directed by Tesh Guttikonda (Influencer, 2022) and Mitch Oliver (The Druid’s Hand, 2022) and written by Al Kaplan (Terrifier 2, 2022), the movie is well-written and clear on direction. Though there are a ton of surprises, the story is believable. It’s a movie that shines in the B movie spectrum because B movies are a little over the top. However, as much as some people hate B movies and bad acting, this movie is something you need to see. It puts B movies into a new perspective. I felt emotions for almost every character involved. Of course there has to be one jerk of the bunch. It was a great watch, waiting for the jerk to succumb to the killers.

The connection between Amy (Amanda Fix North of Normal 2022) and Savannah (Brenna Llewellyn The Sinners 2020) is fantastic. The two actors have a great connection. They work well together and are easily my favorite characters in the movie. They both have their own way of doing things and are trained and good at their craft. When things go wrong, your only hope is that Amy and Savannah make it somehow. You wait for both to work together and end the nightmare. There is so much going on that it’s almost hard to keep up with. The movie is fast-moving and wastes no time in getting started. The instant feel of uneasiness will cradle you in its arms.

In The End…

Lowlifes puts a fresh new spin on revenge movies. Gone are the days of Last House On The Left. Instead, we get this frantic movie to fill our horror gut. It’s not a movie to sleep on. For the average horror fan, it’s a change of pace. Though there’s a little bit of gore, it’s tasteful. The gore won’t make you want to close your eyes. I felt it could use more, but I’m a gorehound.
