Movie Review: Prano Bailey-Bond’s Morbidly Beautiful Horror, ‘Censor’ (2021)

As soon as I saw the official trailer for Censor, I knew I wanted to check it out. This beautiful cinematic horror film was directed by Prano Bailey-Bond as well as written by them and Anthony Fletcher. It stars Niamh Algar.

Synopsis for Censor

Film censor Enid takes pride in her meticulous work, guarding unsuspecting audiences from the deleterious effects of watching the gore-filled decapitations and eye gougings she pores over. Her sense of duty to protect is amplified by guilt over her inability to recall details of the long-ago disappearance of her sister, recently declared dead in absentia. When Enid is assigned to review a disturbing film from the archive that echoes her hazy childhood memories, she begins to unravel how this eerie work might be tied to her past.

I’m someone who personally loves my horror films with extra blood and gore, but if an animal dies… nope, I’m turning it off. Ridiculous but true. That being said, Censor was an interesting look at how others view gore-filled films and how they think films like these can impact society. I would love a job like Enid, but I could see how easy it would be to get lost in the madness and lose your sense of what’s real or not. I sometimes feel that way after binging a show.

Niamh Algar delivers a surreal, emotionally drive performance as Enid. We slowly get to see her world unravel and it’s heartbreaking and terrifying all at the same time. Censor wouldn’t have been the same without her strong and captivating presence on screen. She drove the film and we (the audience) are just along for the ride down this fucked up rabbit hole.

My favorite thing about Censor was hands down the beautiful cinematography. Rich, vibrant imagery and lighting helped set the mood and tone throughout the film as we transition from reality to an almost dreamlike sequence.

This film is one that will hit close to home for those who have a deep love for horror especially underrated, extreme horror. Censor is now available On Demand and if you haven’t checked it out already, what are you waiting for? Let us know if you do and your thoughts! #CensorMovie
