’30 Miles From Nowhere’ (2018) Movie Review

When I stumbled upon the film, 30 Miles From Nowhere, in a discussion thread, I had never heard of it before. I knew I was going to watch it when I saw it starred that two actors from TV shows that I absolutely adore. I had little to no expectations for this film, but let me tell you, it exceeded them all. Aside from typical horror tropes, this was a really fun time.

Synopsis:

When five college pals return to rural Wisconsin for their friend’s funeral, what begins as an uneasy reunion becomes a terrifying fight for survival.

30 Miles From Nowhere is directed by Caitlin Koller (Maid of Horror 2013, Blood Sisters 2017) and written by Seana Kofoed (The Audrey Hepburn Story 2000, Men In Trees TV series). Carrie Preston (True Blood TV series, The Following TV series) and Rob Benedict (Supernatural TV series, Masters Of Sex TV series) were the real winners of the film, stealing every scene they were in. Rob played the asshole friend everyone loves to hate, and Carrie played the crazed host. This film also gets a boost from the rest of the strong supporting cast featuring Rusty Schwimmer (Twister 1996, The Belko Experiment 2017 – read our review here), Marielle Scott (You TV series, Lady Bird 2017) and Cathy Shim (Reno 911 TV series, Balls Of Fury 2007).

30 Miles From Nowhere was a great blend of comedy, dysfunctional friendships and dread. It felt like a season of Friends From College on cocaine. The performances helped elevate the cookie cutter plot of the typical horror of friends in an isolated location. This isn’t the horror movie for everyone. I know a lot of people dislike so much comedy involved in their horror, so if you’re one of those people, I’d advise you to steer clear. However, if you’re looking for an entertaining B level horror flick, 30 Miles From Nowhere a good time killer.
