Women in Horror Month 2020 is already kicking off to a great start. This time we’re highlighting Sarah Schultz. She is incredibly sweet and talented and definitely someone you should have on your radar. Learn more about her love for horror, her badass cosplaying and modeling, her merch site, and more!
PopHorror – Thanks for talking with me, Sarah! You’re such a cheerleader for horror and the horror community. How long have you had a love for horror?
Sarah Schultz – Thank you! That makes me feel so good to hear. I have loved horror since I was a child, I would say about 7 or 8. My first movie was Jaws, the original. I am still not sure if that is truly considered horror, but I know it scared the hell out of me, but in a good way!
PopHorror – I definitely consider it horror – one of the best films ever! What is your favorite horror movie?
Sarah Schultz – This has always been an extremely hard answer to give. I love Pet Sematary. The original, not so much the remake.
PopHorror – Same here! It’s always held a special place in my heart. You’re one of the kindest people I’ve met on social media. How did you get involved with the horror community?
Sarah Schultz – Thank you! You are truly amazing yourself and so damn sweet. It all started with the Mad Monster Convention event, “Miss Scarizona”. I wanted to explore other options like modeling and was leaning towards pinup. Josh suggested this event. I was shy and scared, but after mingling with the guests, I met people I’m still friends with to this day! I felt like I truly belonged finally somewhere. Shoutout to Eben and Jennie, the creators of this awesome Convention.
PopHorror – That’s awesome! You’ve acted in a few films, is being an actress something you’ve always had an interest in doing?
Sarah Schultz – Oh yes, since I was young. I watched the Oscars every year. I read People Magazine. I was also part of the theatre in Junior High School. I loved it. I would memorize lines from movies like Gone with the Wind and reenact scenes in my bedroom mirror.
PopHorror – Sounds like me minus the theatre part. I was always so shy growing up! Do you have plans on doing more acting projects in the future, if so, what are they?
Sarah Schultz – I have a graphic novel my husband and I are putting together that incorporates all my past photoshoots. When I shot with Scout Taylor Compton 2 years ago, we also filmed improvised scenes in between photos so as to create a backstory to all the shoots I’ve done the past few years. We also started writing a script over a year ago named The Sawyer Family, a fan film. It is not for profit, just showing love to one of our favorite films. We will finish the script this year, and start filming at the end of the year. I do have a part in the film, that will allow me to bring out that crazy side a bit.
PopHorror – Oh man, I can’t wait to check that out! You and your hubby run your own online merchandise shop. What inspired that?
Sarah Schultz – Yes! Our baby is a year old. Grave Dirt Clothing is based primarily on the horror genre, but we also have other sections of the store as well that include: Hip hop, Rock, Featured artists, Occult, Serial killers, and more! Josh’s mind doesn’t stop working. He literally created this idea and website overnight. We wanted to create something for the people we share so much in common with, the horror fans. Josh also does music, so we thought why not include that as well.
PopHorror – That’s awesome! I’ll need to check it out sometime soon! You’ve touched on this briefly, so you’re a big fan of cosplaying, correct?
Sarah Schultz – I absolutely adore cosplaying. I love playing make-believe. My favorite sets are Dexter and Freddy vs. Jason. I have an idea for 2 more that will hopefully be completed within the next year or so.
PopHorror – Hell yeah! As a woman in horror, who are your biggest inspirations?
Sarah Schultz – Sheri Moon Zombie, Dee Wallace, and Jenn Nangle.
PopHorror – Love all those ladies! Do you have a favorite film directed by a woman?
Sarah Schultz – American Mary, the Soska Sisters.
PopHorror – That’s a great film! What are your plans for the future?
Sarah Schultz – My plans are to visit the Villisca Axe Murder House again, to finish our investigation, Complete the 2 top secret photoshoots that I mentioned about earlier. I will make announcements for it soon because I will need models. Plus directing and acting in Josh and I’s very first movie together, created by us, and just continuing to do what I love.
