Review of the Horror Home Invasion Film ‘Jackals’ (2017)

Home invasion has always been a topic of horror movies, whether it be You’re Next, Panic Room or the Purge. Now, Shout!Factory presents the new genre film Jackals. Kevin Greutert is helming as director with a script penned by Jared Rivet. Greutert is no stranger when it comes to home invasion flicks, with his prior work on The Strangers. However, this is the first feature film that Rivet has written, so fingers cross for some home invasion goodness.

Official Synopsis:

Set in the 1980s, an estranged family hires a cult deprogrammer to take back their teenage son from a murderous cult, but find themselves under siege when the cultists surround their cabin, demanding the boy back.

The cast includes: Stephen Dorff (Leatherface 2017), Deborah Kara Unger (Silent Hill), Johnathon Schaech (Prom Night), Nick Roux (Caught), Chelsea Ricketts (Scream Queens) and Ben Sullivan (The 100). Most of the cast members have had some prior work in horror, while some of the younger cast is slightly lacking in that experience.

From the trailer, this seems like this is going to be a thrill ride from beginning to end. It seems like the Powells trying to rescue their son from a cult has taken a turn for the worst. All I got to say is that when I watch the film, hopefully nothing happens to the baby. The trailer seems to hint that the child is taken by the cult, sort of like in The Hills Have Eyes. So hopefully, nothing drastically happens. But other than that, the images are dark as the cult takes down the family. The eerie masks evoke the films You’re Next and The Strangers.

Shout!Factory is set to release Jackals on September 1st. The film will be on VOD and will have a limited theatrical release. Will you enter the Powell house as they fight off the Jackals?
