Disney fans, are you ready for a different kind of princess? Are you tired of sugar and spice and everything nice? Maybe you’re in the mood for something a little darker? Or, at least, somewhat misunderstood? Meet Shelley Marie! She’s Disney’s new anti-princess, for lack of a better term, and she’s the brainchild of renowned Disney animator Eric Goldberg. Goldberg’s work appears in a number of Disney animated features, but he’s probably most famous for creating Genie in Disney’s Aladdin. Shelley Marie is an allusion to Frankenstein author Mary Shelley, and I can only assume that “Villainous” is a play on “Villainess.” Far be it from Disney to take it that far, though. Intrigued? I know I am!
Shelley Marie is the centerpiece of Disneyland’s upcoming World of Color Nighttime Spectacular show. Check out the video below and listen to Disney exec Steven Davison tell you all about it!
Villainous Details From The Disney Parks Blog
The Disney Parks Live Entertainment team has been working on this nighttime spectacular for months. The villainous side of Disney characters will be brought to life through fountains, lights, lasers, projections and special effects. Steven Davison, Executive, Parades & Spectaculars, gives us a glimpse into this original Halloween story. This twisted tale carries a young girl named Shelley Marie on an unforgettable journey through devious encounters with The Queen, Ursula, Dr. Facilier, Hades, Jafar, Maleficent and more.
Shelley Marie creator Eric Goldberg had this to say about his newest character:
“She has the vulnerabilities of a little girl, but she’s got this side to her. I think characters like that are very interesting. It puts me in the mind of Lilo from ‘Lilo & Stich.’ She’s an adorable character but can’t help herself from acting out. Shelley is like that. She doesn’t do anything wantonly evil, but she has this thing pulsing in her DNA.”
Shelley Marie makes her debut at Oogie Boogie Bash this fall at Disney California Adventure. The show begins September 17 for 20 select nights. You can get your tickets here.
We also found out that there’s a board game available based on all of the Disney villains. Check it out!
