Nereus is known as “the old man of the sea” in Greek Mythology. He is the son of Pontus and Gaea and the father of the water nymphs known as Nereids and Nerites. One of the Nerids was the mother of Achilles. Nereus was eventually replaced by the much more well known sea god: Triton.
