It’s that time of year where the Christmas trees are lit up bright, the stockings are hung with care, hot coco with extra whip cream, and Holiday horror movies on repeat. Just in the past week, I’ve watched two Christmas horror comedies and one was on my highly anticipated list called Ugly Sweater Party.
This was one hell of a film that took so many turns that I didn’t expect. Let me tell you why!
Ugly Sweater Party features a cast of veteran horror ghouls, including Sean Whalen (The People Under the Stairs 1991), Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp 1983), Jenn Nangle (Malvolia: Queen of Screams), Brad Potts (Puppet Master X, Life Insurance Lottery 2019), Lilith’s Lara Jean Mummert and Colton Wheeler, Gregory Blair (Garden Party Massacre 2018), Charles Chudabala (Death House 2017), Hunter Johnson (2 Jennifer 2016), Colton Wheeler (Lilith 2018) and Tiffani Fest (Circus of the Dead 2014).
The body count is rounded out by an ensemble that includes Marv Blauvelt, Emily Dahm, Berna Roberts, Matt Holbrook, Jody Barton and Kevin Caliber as unsuspecting misfit campers. The film was directed by Aaron Mento.
Official Synopsis for Ugly Sweater Party:
On Christmas Eve at a campsite deep in the woods, an ugly sweater party is in full swing. Best friends Cliff and Jody arrive expecting some mistletoe action from the sexy twins who invited them, but soon realize that they are at a Bible camp. To make matters worse, Cliff is wearing a sweater possessed by the ghost of notorious serial killer Declan Rains.
While the evil sweater slowly possesses Cliff, Jody also realizes that the party guests aren’t as innocent as they first seem. In fact, every camper holds a dark secret that infuses the party with dangerous sexual tension. Just when the pressure between campers reaches a fever pitch, Cliff falls victim to the bloodthirsty rage of the diabolical sweater and a new nightmare begins.
Honestly, I fell in love with this film from the get-go. It has this Harold and Kumar meets Horror vibe and they fucking killed it. It was a hilarious story with over-the-top, ridiculous characters and a blood-splattered Christmas massacre that doesn’t hold back.
Speaking of not holding back, the special effects were glorious. You see dicks being torn off, heads getting smashed in and many more delightfully bloody yuletide events. Beyond the anatomy removal, one scene that really stuck out was when Charles Chudabala’s character, Cliff, was about to get it on with Felissa Rose’s character, Mrs. Mandix, but his ugly sweater possession takes over. Without giving too much away… I’ll just say it reminded me a lot of something extra slimy from Slither. It was horrifyingly insane and Felissa was exceptional as always.
All of the characters were fun, a bit eccentric, and enjoyable to watch. I particularly loved Cliff and Jody, the characters that Charles Chudabala and Hunter Thompson played. They were hilarious, played well off each other, and constantly surprised me with their actions. It was reminiscent of characters like Harold and Kumar, Bill and Ted, Cheech and Chong, and other great duos from the past. Lara Jean Mummert’s character, Hanna, also stood out and is probably one of my favorite characters of hers to date thus far.
Beyond that, I really enjoyed the cameos from Gregory Blair, Jenn Nangle, and Colton Wheeler. Their parts were small but nonetheless memorable, especially that arm wrestling scene. Last but not least, Sean Whalen’s character, Declan Rains, is wicked and he kills it in this role. Evil suits him… Is that a compliment? I think so!
This is a film that doesn’t take itself too seriously and delivers a fun and extra bloody good time. It’s different from anything out there right now and is the perfect addition to your holiday collection. Ugly Sweater Party is exclusively on Amazon Instant Video now!
