‘The Shining’ (1980) Is Coming To 4K UltraHD Blu-ray

Heeeeeeeere’s Blu-ray!” Awesome news from Cannes Film Festival! The Shining has received the 4K restoration treatment and is coming soon to UltraHD Blu-ray! How do we know? Because the 4K restoration is screening at Cannes today. Jealous! I can’t wait to see how it looks. I bet you can’t, either!

Read on for all the chilling details!

The Shining Synopsis

When writer Jack Torrance –who has a history of alcoholism–takes a job as winter caretaker for a hotel high in the Rocky Mountains, he, his wife and their psychic young son will be isolated until spring. But once the first blizzard closes the road out, the accumulated power of evil deeds committed at the hotel begins to drive Jack mad. Now there may be no escape for his wife and son in this haunting story of madness, memory and violence.

Master filmmaker Stanley Kubrick directed and produced the film. He also wrote the screenplay alongside Diane Johnson, based on Stephen King’s novel. The film stars Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Scatman Crothers, and Danny Lloyd. While Stephen King himself is not a fan of the adaptation (the portrayal of Wendy, mostly), the film is considered a masterpiece by most horror fans. Us included!

About The Restoration

According to Warner Bros., the 4K remastering was done using a new 4K scan of the original 35mm camera negative at Warner Bros. Motion Picture Imaging. Steven Spielberg and Stanley Kubrick’s former personal assistant Leon Vitali worked closely with the team to help oversee the mastering process. This is Kubrick’s original 146 minute version of the film .

Final Thoughts

This is gonna be gorgeous, but damn. $40? Steep! Especially since the special features are all previously released. What I wouldn’t give for a Nicholson commentary. Or Duvall. Or King himself! Can you imagine? Still, I’m stoked. I bet this will look amazing on my home system. It comes out on my birthday, so maybe someone will hook me up? *hint hint*

What do you think, Horror Fam? Will you snag a copy of the new UltraHD 4K Blu-ray edition of The Shining? It comes out just in time for Halloween, after all. Tell us in the comments!
