Well Go USA Entertainment recently unveiled the teaser trailer for Takashi Miike’s high-energy, crowd pleasing action crime drama First Love (aka Hatsukoi). The trailer dropped at San Diego Comic-Con as part of the Superhero Kung Fu Extravaganza. The filmmakers describe it as “a fun and anarchic noir-tinged yakuza film that blends genres.” Sign me up! A theatrical release is coming soon.

First Love (2019) Synopsis
First Love is the story of a young boxer and a call girl, who fall passionately in love while getting innocently caught up in a drug-smuggling scheme over the course of one night in Tokyo.
The film stars Masataka Kubota (13 Assassins), Shôta Sometani (Tokyo Tribe), amd Nao Ohmori (Ichi The Killer). Director Miike Miike is once again collaborating with screenwriter Masaru Nakamura (Bird People in China, Sukiyaki Western Django), composer Koji Endo (13 Assassins, Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai) and director of photography Nobuyasu Kita (13 Assassins, Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai, Blade of the Immortal).

Miike first presented First Love at Cannes in May 2019 as part of Directors’ Fortnight. The film has been making the rounds on the festival circuit (and at Comic-Con) more recently.
Well Go USA plans to release the film in select theaters September 27. Digital and home video releases will follow in first quarter 2020.
Final Thoughts
Looks cool! Getting great reviews, too. I admit I’m not super familiar with Takashi Miike’s filmography. Any suggestions about where I should start? Let me know in the comments!
In the meantime, I’ll be sure to check this out in theaters if I can catch it. If not, I’ll snag the 2020 home video release for sure. You should, too!
