After four long years in limbo Michael Reich’s celebrated feature debut, She’s Allergic to Cats (read our review – HERE). emerges in a time of global crisis to be viewed and consumed in the comfort of your homes.
Inspired by real-life and made to look nothing like it, Michael Reich’s semi-autobiographical experimental dramedy She’s Allergic to Cats is so much more than just another indie film about a dude trying to make a movie (we swear). Shot in 4K on Red Cameras and run through DVD players, MiniDV, and VHS tapes, Reich’s first feature is a work of low-fi technical prowess and absurd creative brilliance. Equal parts underdog story and psychedelic video-art collage, not to mention unexpectedly musical, it has something for everyone.
Synopsis for She’s Allergic to Cats
Michael Pinkney (Mike Pinkney, longtime creative collaborator to Reich) is a dog groomer living in a rat-infested Hollywood apartment that spends his nights honing his ‘weird video art’ skills and dreams of being a successful filmmaker and finally getting his all-cat remake of Carrie off the ground. One day on the job, he meets Cora (Sonja Kinski, of the Kinskis) the girl of his dreams. Michael’s inspired to clean his life up to make room for Cora, but their first date gets derailed when they run into Karma and the night spirals further and further from there.
The film is available on VOD from Giant Pictures and will have a special one-night-only digital screening engagement on April 30 at 7 PM EST, presented by The Laser Blast Film Society and Spectacle Theater. It will be streamed on the Spectacle Twitch channel with live commentary from director Michael Reich. More info can be found HERE and you can view the Twitch channel HERE.
