Shower Time: Rihanna to Play Marion Crane on Bates Motel

WARNING: Spoilers!

Devin Faraci of Birth Movies Death was first to announce that Rihanna will be playing Marion Crane in the 5th and final season of Bates Motel. The announcement seems to imply that the last season of A&E’s hit series will simultaneously serve as a remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s original Psycho, released in 1960.

Official Synopsis: Centers on a mother and son who come to a new town so that they can start over and set up a new business, but a lot of mysterious incidents happen, including the unanswered and horrible acts of the son.

In Psycho, Marian Crane (played by Janet Leigh) was Norman’s first on-screen kill; the infamous shower scene is one of the most iconic moments in the history of horror cinema. While tame by today’s standards, it sent audiences reeling when it originally hit theater. Whether it’s even possible for the producers of Bates Motel to recreate intensity of Leigh’s death at the hands of Norman’s “Mother” remains to be seen.

Vera Farmiga will also be returning to Bates Motel Season 5 as Norman’s mother, Norma, despite being killed off during Season 5’s finale. This is in keeping with the original Psycho as well, as the corpse of Mrs. Bates plays a crucial role in Norman’s eventual undoing.

While it’s satisfying to see Bates Motel go from a prequel to a remake, producers will be hard pressed to recreate the film’s most shocking moments, as the element of surprise will be completely absent. Still, I’ll be excited to see them give it a shot!
