Writer/director Michael Chaves has delivered an intensely chilling supernatural creeper; The Maiden packs more genuine scares into 8 minutes than most feature length films. It tells the story of an ambitious real-estate agent looking to unload a dilapidated mansion with “character and history”. More like “sectors and misery” if you ask me!
In a recent interview with Bloody Disgusting, Chaves explains how The Maiden came to fruition; the story was conceived during the nationwide housing bust that began in 2008:
“I was fascinated by the crash and how corrupt everything about it was. I’ve always loved haunted house stories, but I wanted some kind of a twist. I started wondering ‘what happens before the young family moves in?’ As a real estate agent, how could you sell something like that?’”
As with many other exceptional short films, The Maiden is being developed into a full-length feature; it seems certain to appeal to fans of supernatural horror like the Insidious franchise and modern Gothics. We’ll keep you posted as details emerge.
