Mary Lambert’s horror resume is pretty impressive. As a director, Lambert has helmed a number of frightful projects, including a Tales From The Crypt episode, Urban Legends: Bloody Mary, Mega Python vs. Gatoroid, Halloweentown II, and, probably most famously, Stephen King’s Pet Sematary (1989) and Pet Sematary II. What’s next for the prolific, versatile director? According to Variety, it’s a film adaptation of Mira Grant’s mermaid thriller, Rolling In The Deep. With the massive recent success of The Shape of Water, you can bet there will be a lot of Merfolk-loving eyes on this one!
So what is Rolling In The Deep all about, and what do we know so far? Read on for the details!
Rolling In The Deep Synopsis
When the Imagine Network commissioned a documentary on mermaids, to be filmed from the cruise ship Atargatis, they expected what they had always received before: an assortment of eyewitness reports that proved nothing, some footage that proved even less, and the kind of ratings that only came from peddling imaginary creatures to the masses.
They didn’t expect actual mermaids. They certainly didn’t expect those mermaids to have teeth.
This is the story of the Atargatis, lost at sea with all hands. Some have called it a hoax; others have called it a maritime tragedy. Whatever the truth may be, it will only be found below the bathypelagic zone in the Mariana Trench… and the depths are very good at keeping secrets.
Screenwriter Sean Hood, who wrote Halloween: Resurrection (we won’t hold that against him), is set to adapt the novel for the big screen.
Lambert had this to say about the project:
“Rolling in the Deep is a film led by complicated badass female characters. I’ve been waiting to make a film like this my entire career. Our mermaids are not cliché, sugary cartoon princesses; they will take you down if you stand in their way.”
Branded Pictures Entertainment optioned the novel rights and will Produce.
