PopHorror Goes to Halloweenapalooza 2017

On October 14th, I had the opportunity to attend Ottumwa’s Halloweenapalooza. The day was filled with horror films, both feature length and shorts, in the midst of vendors and panels. This year’s guests were Children of the Corn’s Isaac and Malachi: John Franklin and Courtney Gains. When you think of Iowa, you think corn. So it was perfect to have our two favorite corn cult kids to screen Children of the Corn. Other guests included were Midnite Mausoleum hosts Marlena Midnite and Robyn Graves, Jill Sixx Gevargizian, Attack Of The Killer Podcast and hypnotist Ray Thompson.

There were so many amazing films in Halloweenpalooza’s film festival. My favorite out of the entire festival was American Zombie. This film took the average family and gave it a horror twist. The plot is pretty simple: a zombie family sits down to eat dinner. The run time of the short was approximately nine minutes, but it was nine minutes of gore and comedy. Another film that I would like to give a shout out to is The Witch Tree. This film was scary and did well with placing it in the ’70s in the UK. Below is the list of winners of the film festival:

Best Feature Film – Stranger in the Night (Aaron Parpart)
Runner Up Feature Film – 3 Dead Trick or Treaters (Torin Langen) – check out our review of the film here
Best Short Film – The Dark Hunger (Anthony Williams)
Runner Up Short Film – We Summoned A Demon (Chris McInroy)
Best Kill – Dark Roast (Topher Hansson)
Halloween Spirit – 3 Dead Trick or Treaters (Torin Langen)
Audience Choice – Scared To Death (Kate Lavin)

The best thing about the festival was having our two favorite of Gatlin residents, Isaac and Malachi. I got to meet both stars of the film. For the showing of Children of the Corn, Franklin and Gains introduced the movie and followed up with a Q and A afterwards. To top the whole night off, there was a midnight showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show with the props for it.

Overall, I had a great time at Halloweenapalooza. I can’t wait to see what films will be shown next year and what guests will be coming in 2018.
