It’s no surprise to anyone that knows me that I am a Stephen King fan. My current mission is to read all of his works. The other day, I was perusing one of my favorite groups there. I saw a post in this group and I immediately knew I had to find out more about a fellow Constant Reader and his shop.
Jesse Farrar Nelson is the owner of the Etsy shop KingsDomainSigns. He thought of this idea a few weeks ago and started to produce these cool signs. I decided to have a little chat with him about his artwork, his hometown of Bangor, Maine and our beloved Stephen King. He started off with these magical words: “I can talk Stephen King all day.”
Before we discuss King, here’s a little bit more about the signs. They are handmade in Bangor, Maine, the town where both Jesse and Stephen King live. The signs are constructed of pine and are designed based on our favorite King locations. They include longitude and latitude, which Nelson has spent a lot of time researching. Some are on official King maps, others are described within King books and some he just used his best judgment.
PopHorror – Hi, Jesse. Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with me. What’s it like living in Bangor?
Jesse Farrar Nelson – There is no other place I would rather live. It is quiet, has clean air and the people are great. I did spend a couple of summers in LA and, while there was a lot to do, I am definitely a New England Man.
PopHorror – Have you ever been to Stephen King’s house?
Jesse Farrar Nelson – I have been outside of it plenty of times, but never inside though. Back in the day, the King’s would hand out candy for Halloween. Of course, that got too crazy and they had to stop. My father has had the opportunity to go inside when he was delivering for UPS in the 1980s.
PopHorror – That’s awesome! Thank you for sharing that! I have never been out East. So, how did you get started in sign making?
Jesse Farrar Nelson – The East is great. Very beautiful and full of old houses. I actually used to manage a pizza place. We had our delivery vehicle wrapped in vinyl graphics. I had been looking to get out of the food industry, so I spoke to the owner to the vinyl company. One thing led to another and here we are, keeping ourselves extremely busy.
PopHorror – That’s great! I actually used to run a pizza place as well. I am on a mission to read all of King’s work. I’m currently reading IT. Have you read all of his books?
Jesse Farrar Nelson – I’m getting there! I read IT when I was twelve. Throughout middle and high school, I just went nuts and read them nonstop. I haven’t read only about seven of them. My absolute favorite book is IT. Derry is Bangor in disguise, which gave the book so much realism for me.
PopHorror – Wow! That is so neat. Will you be expanding your signs to authors other than King?
Jesse Farrar Nelson – I’ve designed some Game of Thrones, although I haven’t actually produced them yet. I also plan on Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, as well. These will be more detailed and not have the longitude/latitude.
PopHorror- Ooh, Star Wars! My other favorite! Can’t wait to see those! It was awesome talking with you. Thank you so much for taking the time to chat.
Jesse Farrar Nelson –Thanks so much for getting in touch with me! It really means a lot! Take care!
Here are some of the signs Jesse has to offer in his Etsy shop. He is currently running a special on the Derry sign. It is $25 until the release of IT. He can also customize to another King place, just ask him.
He has many others in his shop. You want a place that isn’t listed? Give him a shout! You can shop for your sign here. I can’t wait to get my hands on one of these, although I’m still trying to decide which one. I’m leaning a bit towards the Overlook Hotel. What do you guys think? I want to thank Jesse again for taking time to chat with me. We are all really excited here at PopHorror for the signs and getting to know a fellow Constant Reader from Derry… I mean, Bangor.
