About six months ago, rumors began swirling that Lionsgate was planning on reviving the lucrative SAW franchise with the purported title SAW: LEGACY.
It’s not a rumor anymore!
Last night, Fangoria reported that, not only has LEGACY been greenlit, but the Spierig Brothers (DAYBREAKERS) have been hired to helm the film: “While story and cast details have yet to be revealed, OMDC has confirmed that the Spierig Brothers will shoot the film from September 12th to October 21st in Toronto, ON.”
SAW: LEGACY is written by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger (PIRANHA 3D), and is produced by Mark Burg and Oren Koules, with Peter Block, Dan Heffner, Leigh Whannell, and James Wan serving as Executive Producers. No word yet on a cast or release date, but considering the SAW franchise was a Halloween staple for Lionsgate, it’s not unreasonable to speculate that LEGACY will hit US theaters in October of 2017. We’ll keep you posted as details emerge.
In the meantime, reminisce on some of Jigsaw’s greatest traps in the video below.
The franchise revolves around the fictional character of John Kramer, also called the “Jigsaw Killer” or simply “Jigsaw”. He was introduced briefly in Saw and developed in more detail in Saw II. Rather than killing his victims outright, Jigsaw traps them in situations that he calls “tests” or “games” to test their will to live through physical or psychological torture. Despite the fact that John was murdered in Saw III, the films continue to focus on the posthumous influence of the Jigsaw Killer and his apprentices by exploring his character via flashbacks.
