Random (2015) A Romantically Disturbing Horror Short

I’m always searching for new horror material and, lucky for me, I was introduced to some horror shorts that Cindy Maples was involved in. First, let’s discuss Random… which is the perfect name for this wonderfully bizarre short.

Not only does Random star Maples, but she also directed and wrote this horror short, which was unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. It has a run time of a little over 7 minutes and tells the story of Nancy (Maples) and her lover, Evin (Rusty James), who have just had the most wonderful night. Everything is perfect until an unexpected tragedy happens.

The story telling for Random was beautifully written. I loved how the couple slowly reminisced about their night, going into intimate detail, and looking blissfully happy yet horribly tired… barely able to keep their eyes open. Then we find out the awful truth about what really happened.

Although the short mostly takes place with the couple in bed, both Maples and James deliver raw performances and you can’t help but feel their passion as well as their sorrow as things unfold. With a setting like this, the film relies heavily on the characters and how they present themselves, and these two undoubtedly had the viewers eating out of the palms of their hands.

I loved the ending and the sick turn of events that occured. I didn’t see it coming and when it did, I felt a little heartbroken. One of the best tragic romance stories I’ve ever seen.

Final Thoughts:

Overall, Random is a romantically disturbing story that will surprise many. You’ll think… is this a romance story or a horror story, but believe, me it’s both. Maples has a unique vision of horror and so far, I love what she bring to the table. If you have the opportunity to watch it, let us know what you think.
