It doesn’t look like the humans are super pleased with the King of the Monsters this time around.
A second trailer has dropped for the new Toho Co. Godzilla film, Godzilla Resurgence, the first in the series in nearly twelve years. The new trailer shows us a lot of what the last one did – most notably, Godzilla’s new look, bloody and wild-eyed. This isn’t the cute Godzilla from previous years; this is a monster through and through, and one who doesn’t look like he takes too kindly to the puny humans attempting to stop him.
Said puny humans will be played by a wide variety of Japanese actors, both new and old to the scene: Hiroki Hasegawa, Satomi Ishihara, and Yutaka Takenouchi are the three leads who, judging from the new trailer, are trying to stop Godzilla from (yet again) laying waste to Tokyo. In this case, though, it looks like the Japanese soldiers are putting in a lot of effort in their attempts to save their city, with tanks, jets, and bombers all firing on the King of Monsters. Of course, despite their tenacity, their defenses don’t seem to be doing much to help. Poor Tokyo.
The film will be co-directed by Shinji Higuchi and Hideaki Anno, the latter of which also wrote the screenplay. Higuchi’s previous experience with Godzilla saw him serving as Assistant Special Effects Director in 1984’s The Return of Godzilla; however, he is most famous for having directed almost all of the Gamera series of kaiju films, so clearly Higuchi has plenty of giant-monster-film expertise. Anno is most famous for having created, directed, and produced the popular Neon Genesis Evangelion series of anime, made famous for its non-traditional storytelling and its staunch anti-otaku view on the culture. (Higuchi is credited as a writer, assistant director, and art director/storyboarder for the series, so this won’t be the first time the two men have worked together.) Given what a mind-trip Evangelion is as a whole, it will be very interesting to see how Anno’s writing translates to a Godzilla film; it might be why the design for the new Godzilla is more horrific than previous incarnations.
Godzilla Resurgence will premier in Japan on July 29th, 2016 – that’s a little over a week away! – and will undoubtedly come to America shortly after. We can’t wait to see the King in action once again!
