Actress Kaitlyn Bernard is a rising star and is making 2019 her year to shine. She has several new projects including Lifetime’s Homekilling Queen, the indie film The Color Rose, and the new feature called The Professor where she worked alongside Johnny Depp.
So as you can see, she is one busy lady. That’s why we’re super grateful that she took the time to chat with us about her upcoming projects, what it was like to work on Netflix’s 1922, and much more!
PopHorror – It’s great to talk with you Kaitlyn. Have you always had an interest in being an actress?
Kaitlyn Bernard – Thank you! I started in musical theatre when I was around three years old and then after that I started doing some commercials and modeling. When I was around twelve, I started doing film and television, which was what I truly fell in love with.
PopHorror – That’s awesome. How did you get it involved in the filmmaking business?
Kaitlyn Bernard – From musical theatre, I started doing some commercial acting and then started to gain more and more interest in film/tv roles. I initially did a bunch of student films and smaller film/tv roles until I eventually landed my first lead in a feature in a movie called The Healer. I played a young girl living with incurable cancer, so it was a challenging role but an incredible experience and that really sparked my love for the business. I’ve been really lucky as my career has really evolved organically from there.
PopHorror – That’s great to hear. One of your biggest roles was in Netflix’s adaptation of Stephen King’s novella, 1922. How did that role come about for you?
Kaitlyn Bernard – I was actually on a plane flying across the country to visit my family on the east coast when the director of 1922 was in Vancouver doing the live auditions for the role of Shannon. My agent sent me the material and asked if I wanted to self tape so I read the script on the plane and immediately fell in love with the project and the role. I ended up having to drive about 3 hours after I landed to tape with a producer friend of ours in Halifax. The only place we could find to tape at was in the upstairs of a Halifax pub so it was quite funny. In any case, it all worked out in the end!
PopHorror – Seems like destiny! You have some pretty awesome new/upcoming films. One of them is Lifetime’s Homekilling Queen. I’m a sucker for lifetime shows. Can you tell us about the movie?
Kaitlyn Bernard – Homekilling Queen follows the story of Whitney Manning, who is the entitled and deranged daughter of wealthy and equally disturbed Connie Manning. Whitney is determined to become homecoming queen and nothing stands in her way until Natasha, the edgy underdog, decides to take a stand against her leading with an anti-bullying platform.
PopHorror – I love it and must see it! Can you tell us more about your character?
Kaitlyn Bernard – This was one of my first times playing the villain, which actually ended up being really fun. My character basically gets everything she wants through the sneaky ways of her mother and grandmother and they usually don’t get caught. What was really cool about this film was that they showed Whitney at school versus how she carries on her life at home. They did a good job at showcasing the characters insecurities and vulnerability.
PopHorror – Another upcoming film is the Color Rose. How did that role come about and what is it about?
Kaitlyn Bernard – The Color Rose is a murder mystery, written and directed by Courtney Paige which I’m currently filming in Kelowna, BC at the moment. The story takes place in a small religious town where seven girls are known as ‘The Sins’, each one representing one of the seven deadly sins. They soon, however, realize that there is more to their religious town after they go missing one by one. I play Grace Carver, the daughter of the town pastor.
PopHorror – Oh, that sounds really good as well! What’s your character like?
Kaitlyn Bernard – Grace Carver the leader of the group ‘The Sins’. Grace Carver seemingly has it all together on the outside, but in reality has a very dark mind. She’s very composed but also has a dark side to her and gentle soul. She’s the pastor’s daughter, valedictorian and a straight A student.
PopHorror – She sounds complicated and a fun character to play. Another big project your involved with is The Professor starring Johnny Depp and many other great actors. What’s it feel like to be apart of film with Depp and other big names?
Kaitlyn Bernard – Growing up watching Johnny Depp’s films such as Pirates of The Caribbean and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, made it a very surreal experience! The Professor is a dark comedy drama that follows the life of a college professor (Johnny Depp) when he finds out he has a terminal illness and only six months to live.
PopHorror – Can you tell us about your character?
Kaitlyn Bernard – I play Taylor, Olivia’s girlfriend, who is the daughter of Johnny Depp’s character.
PopHorror – That’s awesome. A lot of your films are in the horror/thriller genre. Do you enjoy that genre and if so, what is your favorite scary movie?
Kaitlyn Bernard – I do enjoy quite a few horror/thriller films, especially psychological thrillers. My favourite horror/thriller at the moment would be Nightcrawler starring Jake Gyllenhaal.
PopHorror – That’s a good one! Are there any other upcoming projects you’d like to talk about?
Kaitlyn Bernard – Yes, a film called Spontaneous. It’s another feature film that I shot last year starring Katherine Langford (13 Reasons Why) and is based on the book written by Aaron Starmer. It’s a dark comedy about a group of high school seniors who are about to graduate when all of the sudden, one by one, they start spontaneously combusting for no apparent reason. You can also catch the festival circuit for a short film I did called The Loneliest Boy In The World, written, produced and starring Dylan Schmid (1922).
