PopHorror Let's Get Scared
The next chapter in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is just around the corner (Friday 24th, 2020!!) and I’m stoked to be talking with some of the cast for this beloved Netflix series. First up is the incredibly talented, Tyler Cotton, who plays the socially awkward warlock, Melvin. Tyler discusses how he got involved with this series, what we can expect from his character, his favorite fandoms, and more!
PopHorror – Thanks for talking with me, Tyler! My first question for you is, how did you get involved in acting?
Tyler Cotton – Of course! Always happy to talk! I’ve kinda been involved in acting all my life. My dad had a TV show in Calgary called The PetGuys so through that show I got to do some radio and commercial work, I was even on the show once or twice. In Calgary, I also did some background work with my dad. It wasn’t until a year after high school though that I really considered it as a career, I was on set doing background on Hell On Wheels and I got the chance to chat with Christopher Heyerdahl and I realized “this is what I want to do” so I packed my bags a few weeks later and moved to Vancouver and I haven’t looked back!
PopHorror – That’s amazing. Good for you! Beyond The PetGuys, what was your first experience on a show?
Tyler Cotton – The first show I was in while pursuing a career was on The Magicians where I played an ice cream vendor.
PopHorror – How did you get involved with the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina?
Tyler Cotton – Originally, I auditioned for Harvey, obviously, I didn’t get the role as it went to the extremely talented Ross Lynch. My agent sent me the audition for Melvin and I loved the character and thought I would be able to bring a lot to the role, I guess they felt the same way, hahaha.
PopHorror – I think you’re great as Melvin but totally could see you as Harvey as well. But Ross does do a great job. How does it feel to be on such a popular Netflix show?
Tyler Cotton – It feels amazing, I’m so blessed and grateful to be a part of such an amazing show with an incredible fanbase. I love seeing the support and messages from fans!
PopHorror – I bet – it’s such a great show! Tell us a bit about your character, Melvin?
Tyler Cotton – Melvin is a very well dressed and shy warlock. It feels like Melvin is out of place in the witch world sometimes and because of that, he doesn’t really feel like he fits in.
PopHorror – In Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Part 2, Melvin is killed but then resurrected by Sabrina. That was a pretty intense episode. What was it like filming that?
Tyler Cotton – That was a long day! That was a hard scene to film both technically for the crew and personally. Melvin dies in it all day, so I was dying over and over again. Although I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have a blast filming that scene.
PopHorror – It’s one of the best scenes in the entire series if you ask me! Do you enjoy playing a witch – a student of the church of night? I’m a huge horror and nerd fan, so I feel like if I had that opportunity I would be geeking out, lol.
Tyler Cotton – I love it so much! I’m a huge nerd so the fact that I get to play someone who has any sort of powers or abilities makes me super happy!
PopHorror – YESSS!! Who is your favorite character on the show?
Tyler Cotton – I don’t know if I have a favourite character on the show, they are all so unique in their own way and all have attributes and characteristics that I love and relate too.
PopHorror – This is true. What can we expect from your character in part 3, which airs this Friday?
Tyler Cotton – I don’t want to give away much but we can definitely expect to see some classic Melvin moments but we will also see some new sides to Melvin that I’m really excited about. A few scenes come to mind that I can’t wait for the fans to see!
PopHorror – Awesome – now I’m really excited! I read that you love Star Wars. What is your favorite Star Wars film and character?
Tyler Cotton – I LOVE Star Wars! I’ve gotta go with the classic, A New Hope is my all-time favourite film and my favourite character has got to be Luke Skywalker himself! The scene where he looks off into the twin sunset gives me chills every time!
PopHorror – I can feel your enthusiasm for the franchise, haha! I also saw that you would love to play Robin. So I also have to ask what is your favorite Batman film?
Tyler Cotton – Robin is definitely my dream role; I don’t remember a time in my life where I didn’t want to be Robin. I remember being super young and while everyone always wanted to be Batman I was running around dressed as Robin. The first comic book I ever read was actually a Robin comic! I still have it! My favourite Batman movie is actually one of the animated ones titled Under The Red Hood with a close second being The Dark Knight.
PopHorror – Last but not least, do you have any upcoming projects?
Tyler Cotton – I’ve got a few projects in the works. I’m also writing a few short films that I’m really passionate about!
