Hellraiser: Judgement (2017) – Possible Theatrical Release!

Hellraiser has not hit the big screen since early 1996 with Hellraiser: Bloodline. Since then, we have been treated with five additional sequels that have all gone straight to DVD. Fans of the series and the mythology have had mixed feelings about these movies and some have been thirsting for a return to the series’ dark and macabre roots. Cue the Hellraiser: Judgement announcement that promises to be a cut above the rest of those films.

Gary Tuncliffe, writer/director of Hellraiser: Judgement, had this to say about the project:

“This is not a simple recycling of the Hellraiser formula; this is a film that will boast some of the strangest, most bizarre, horrific and thought provoking sequences ever seen in a horror film, a horror film that owes it’s inspiration to the works of Heironymous Bosch, and Francis Bacon as well as Cronenberg, Fincher and Lynch as well as obviously and foremost Clive Barker.”

That is a hell of a promise to Hellraiser fans! Hellraiser: Judgement already has a lot stacked against it since Doug Bradley removed himself from the project almost immediately after its announcement due to taking offense at being asked to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement. While that is sad news, at least it isn’t due to a bad script like Hellraiser: Revelations. The new man in charge of portraying Pinhead, Paul T. Taylor, looks terrifying as the Lead Cenobite and had some pretty awesome news for us.

In a Facebook post he had this to say about the project:

“I’ve been out of my pin-head lately and have neglected to post anything about my upcoming appearance as Pinhead. But I have learned recently that Hellraiser: Judgement might be getting NOT the typical straight-to-video treatment, but a genuine THEATRICAL RELEASE! I still don’t have a definite date for the release; the previously announced March 28 date was premature and I should have known better than to trust IMDb for confirmed information. Lesson learned. But when the trailer comes out and you finally see the poster…WATCH OUT!”

Seeing a theatrical release of a Hellraiser movie is something I could cross off of my bucket list, even if there is no Doug Bradley. As for the release date mix-up, it’s okay, Paul. We have all had moments where IMDb misled us. I would be fine if it got pushed all the way back to October if this thing got a theatrical run. The film is said to explore the many factions of Hell, much like Clive Barker’s Scarlet Gospels did, and what a wild ride that was. So, as a huge fan of the series, I can barely contain my excitement. What do you think of this upcoming project? What would you like to see in Hellraiser: Judgement?
