‘Ghostbusters’ (1984) Sequel In The Works, Teaser Released!

“Ray. When someone asks you if you want a Ghostbusters sequel, you say YES!”

No, I’m not talking about a sequel to the modern Ghostbusters of a few years ago. I’m talking about a sequel to the original 1984 film — one of the greatest comedies of all time! Too good to be true? I thought so, too. But EW got the scoop this week.

Watch the brand new teaser trailer below and read on for all the details!

Who Ya Gonna Call?

You’re gonna call Jason Reitman! According to EW’s report, Jason Reitman, son of Ivan (who directed the original), is going to tackle the new sequel. The younger Reitman has a history of directing intelligent comedies, including Juno, Thank You For Smoking, and Up In The Air, so at first glance, this seems like a pretty good fit.

Reitman tells EW:

“I’ve always thought of myself as the first Ghostbusters fan, when I was a 6-year-old visiting the set. I wanted to make a movie for all the other fans. This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day.”

Ivan, the elder Reitman, will produce the film for Sony. They are looking at a 2020 release date. No word on the cast yet, or if any of the original actors will return. Harold Ramis (Egon) passed away in 2014 and Rick Moranis is basically retired from the Hollywood scene. Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and Annie Potts are all still active, however, and could be in play.

Final Thoughts

I’ll be honest. I wasn’t a big fan of the reboot. I felt like it should have been a “passing of the torch” sequel. They could have opened it at Egon’s funeral, made a couple of, “We’re gettin’ too old for this shit,” jokes, and trained the new team to take over (or become franchisees). I think that may still be the best approach for this sequel. Is that the direction the Reitmans will take it? I guess we’ll find out! Right now, all we know is it’s taking place in the same universe.

Stay tuned for more Ghostbusters sequel news as we get it! What do you think? Are you ready for a third film in the epic comedy franchise? Tell us in the comments!
