Five years before Sarah Michelle Gellar and the Scooby Gang patrolled the streets of Sunnydale, vampires had another Buffy to deal with. I’m talking, of course, about Kristy Swanson (Deadly Friend), star of 1992’s Buffy The Vampire Slayer. This cult classic served as the inspiration for Joss Whedon’s much revered television series of the same name. Good news! Fox sends word the original Buffy is coming to Blu-ray this fall!
BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER – 25TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION Details From Fox:
Kristy Swanson, Donald Sutherland, Paul Reubens, and Luke Perry star in this funny, action-packed fright-fest. For pampered cheerleader Buffy (Swanson), the only thing worse than discovering that her town is infested with vampires is being told it’s up to her to defeat them all – including their creepy leader (Rutger Hauer)! But, with help from a mysterious stranger (Sutherland) and a handsome mechanic (Perry), Buffy’s soon kicking serious vampire butt in this cult classic!
Buffy The Vampire Slayer originally hit theaters in July of 1992. It opened in 5th place behind #1 Death Becomes Her and 3 holdovers from the previous weekend. The film took in $4.5 million en route to a $16.6 million lifetime gross. Hardly gangbusters, but obviously Joss Whedon didn’t care. He knew he had a hit on his hands and, five years later, the TV series was born!
