Entertainment Weekly gives us the first official look of Bill Skarsgård (Allegiant, Hemlock Grove) as Pennywise in the film adaption of the classic Stephen King novel It. Directed by Andrés Muschietti (Mama, 2013), the film is set for release on September 8th, 2017.

“It’s such an extreme character. Inhumane,” Skarsgård says of Pennywise. “It’s beyond even a sociopath, because he’s not even human. He’s not even a clown. I’m playing just one of the beings It creates.” (Source: http://www.ew.com/article/2016/07/13/it-movie-pennywise-first-look)

This is technically the first feature film adaptation of the novel, but Tim Curry brought It to startling life in the 1990 TV miniseries and his version of Pennywise has become a horror icon. Many fans are divided amongst one another with the idea of an It remake. Curry’s horrifying performance as the monstrous clown is beloved among horror and film fans alike. Some believe that Curry’s portrayal of Pennywise is so chilling that it can’t be touched. Luckily for the fans, Skarsgård agrees, telling Entertainment Weekly, “Tim Curry’s performance was truly great. But it’s important to do something different because of that. I’ll never be able to make a Tim Curry performance as good as Tim Curry.” Bill Skarsgård is a smart man. Be like Bill.

For anyone not familiar with It, here is the official synopsis of the novel by Stephen King:

A promise made twenty-eight years ago calls seven adults to reunite in Derry, Maine, where as teenagers they battled an evil creature that preyed on the city’s children. Unsure that their Losers Club had vanquished the creature all those years ago, the seven had vowed to return to Derry if IT should ever reappear. Now, children are being murdered again and their repressed memories of that summer return as they prepare to do battle with the monster lurking in Derry’s sewers once more.

If you weren’t familiar with It prior to this news… SHAME!
