If you haven’t heard the name Kourosh Ahari, let me tell you that he’s one of the most promising young directors working today. His film dossier includes some pretty impressive and diverse choices. One of his earlier projects, The Yellow Wallpaper, is based on an 1892 short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. It was a trailblazing feminist fable with a surreal twinge of horror, and it fits perfectly with climate of the elevated horror movement that’s letting the mainstream in on what horror fans already knew… Drama and good storytelling have always been a part of the framework of a good horror film. The blank canvas of infinite possibilities that a frightening or unnerving screenplay has welcomes anyone or anything that will heighten tension to a fever pitch. Kourosh Ahari has always understood that.
His next film, The Secret of 40, pushed media technology boundaries through an immersive three screen experience. It dealt with a grief stricken son (Julian de la Celle: Heroes TV series) who uses an ancient text, based on actual Iranian folklore, to bring his deceased mother back to life. The three screen technology allowed for a panoramic view of single scenes and for multiple scenes to be displayed simultaneously. The film opened up radical new possibilities for innovative story arcs, and also featured horror icons Judie Aronson (Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, 13 Fanboy) and Robert Rusler (A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge, Vamp).
His latest project is The Night, his first feature length thriller and a high profile collaboration of seasoned talent on both sides of the camera, including one award winning actor that we couldn’t wait to mention.
