The Fantasia International Film Festival is proud to present the first ever retrospective of celebrated Japanese filmmaker Nao Yoshigai, who will be in attendance and available for interviews. An accomplished dancer and choreographer on-top of director, Yoshigai’s most recent short GRAND BOUQUET was a Cannes Director’s Fortnight selection.
Her work transports the viewer to a world of great beauty and great intrigue with a unique expressionistic explosion of pastel color and human vibrations. Her shorts, four of which are included in this series, embrace the beautiful, the grotesque, and everything in between.
Fantasia will feature the Canadian Premiere GRAND BOUQUET, in which a woman faces off against a mysterious dark force with a particularly colorful response. Starring Hanna Chan, a 2018 nominee for Best New Performer at the Hong Kong Film Awards and also of this year’s G AFFAIRS, who will also be present at the festival.
With her background in body movement Yoshigai imbues all of her films with a captivating focus on the physicality of the human form, such as in STORIES FLOATING ON THE WIND (Canadian premiere), wherein a young woman furiously bikes around a coastal town, encountering strange children and wildlife. Similarly, HOTTAMARU DAYS, which will celebrate its International Premiere at Fantasia, tells the story of four nymphs obsessed with physical rituals who suddenly discover someone else in their home.
The Fantasia International Film Festival runs from July 11th to August 1st in downtown Montreal, QC, Canada. For more information on the titles listed in this press release, as well as the complete line-up of films, events, and guests, please visit our website: fantasiafestival.com
