Danish Crime Films Invade Alamo On Demand

Alamo On Demand fancies itself a 21st century video store. They have the video store equivalent of “Staff Picks.” Every single title is curated by a member of the Drafthouse team. If it’s there, someone on the team wants you to see it. Pretty cool!

So what do they want you to see next? Why, a series of six Danish Crime Films! What’s that all about?

Read on for all the details!

Danish Crime Series

From The Alamo On Demand Press Release

Austin, TX – Alamo Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is proud to announce the next series in a yearlong partnership between the Alamo On Demand VOD platform and the Danish Film Institute with the support of the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark. The series features 36 films in total, rolled out in thematic “six packs” the last Thursday every other month. In addition to the 36 featured films, Alamo is also curating one of the largest collections of Danish films on the planet, many exclusive to Alamo on Demand. Anyone who watches all 36 films in the series will be invited to a “Meet the Danes” party in Los Angeles or New York. Dates and details will be announced later.

In particular, we recommend checking out THE OLSEN GANG SEES RED, exclusively available on Alamo on Demand and available for the first time ever in the United States. The same actors and director made 14 films together over 30 years, only ending with star Arne Bundgaard died during production of what would be the final installment. The story (almost) always follows the same rhythm – Egon is let out of prison. While in prison, Egon has developed a plan that will make them millions. Egon, Benny and Kjeld execute an elaborate, Rube-Goldberg-inspired heist. Something goes wrong. Egon goes to jail. The next film begins the cycle all over again.  THE OLSEN GANG SEES RED is our personal favorite and was also the inspiration for the heist in the recent BAD TIMES AT THE EL ROYALE.

FLICKERING LIGHTS is available free with the discount code CRIMEPAYS. Renting or purchasing the Danish Crime 6 pack of films is 25% off (no code necessary) through September 3, 2020.

Danish Crime Series

The Best of Danish Crime Six Pack:

FLICKERING LIGHTS (2000, Director: Anders Thomas Jensen)

Anders Thomas Jensen’s directorial debut features an ensemble cast of what would turn out to be long-time creative collaborators. After one last heist, four gangsters (Mads Mikkelsen, Soren Pilmark, Ulrich Thomsen and Nikolaj Lie Kaas) want to settle down and open a restaurant together, but it isn’t quite so easy to leave the game.

THE GUILTY (2018, Director: Gustav Möller)

A horrific crime; an emergency responder struggling to stay off the edge; a kidnapping victim calling in for help. This is all we’re going to tell you about first-time feature filmmaker Gustav Möller’s unmissable and gripping debut thriller.

IN CHINA THEY EAT DOGS (2000, Director: Lasse Spang Olsen )

Arvid’s girlfriend leaves him because he is dull. To win her back, he stops a robbery, masterminds one of his own and then keeps on rolling. An absolutely rollicking thrill ride with sharp humor, outrageous characters and blistering action.

THE OLSEN GANG SEES RED (1976, Director: Erik Balling)

The Danish cultural phenomenon, the legendary Olsen Gang, have an elaborate and brilliant plan to steal a priceless Ming Vase. What could go wrong? These same actors (playing the same roles) made 14 films together over a span of 30 years. See the magic of the Olsen Gang for the first time ever in the US, exclusively on Alamo on Demand.

PUSHER III (2005, Director Nicolas Winding Refn)

The third of Nicolas Winding Refn’s PUSHER trilogy (and his personal favorite of the electric trilogy) finds the head of the Copenhagen underworld fighting for dominance when ecstasy hits the scene.

R (2011, director: Tobias Lindholm)

Shot in a shut-down penitentiary with real ex-convicts and ex-guards cast in their actual roles, R is a powerful, visceral expression of prison life and both the community and criminal business it fosters.
