We’ve been talking about the rumored Child’s Play television series for some time now. Don Mancini, the man behind the original 1988 film, has been in talks with SyFy to bring the project to life. Good news for fans: according to Deadline, SyFy has finally put in a series order. The announcement became official at NBC/Universal’s presentation at the TCA Winter Press Tour. The official series name? Chucky!
Read on for all the details!
Chucky Synopsis
After a vintage Chucky doll turns up at a suburban yard sale, an idyllic American town is thrown into chaos as a series of horrifying murders begin to expose the town’s hypocrisies and secrets. Meanwhile, the arrival of enemies — and allies — from Chucky’s past threatens to expose the truth behind the killings, as well as the demon doll’s untold origins as a seemingly ordinary child who somehow became this notorious monster.
Original Child’s Play scribe Don Mancini is working with producer David Kirschner and Universal Cable Productions to produce the all new Chucky TV series.
“I’m Chucky, Wanna Play?”
Mancini and Kirschner will team with Nick Antosca and Harley Peyton (Channel Zero) to form a 4 headed Producing monster. We knew that Mancini was planning to write the pilot script himself, but now it sounds like he will run the show and direct the first episode.
Back when we first reported this, Mancini said:
“I’ve long wanted to bring Chucky to television and Syfy is the perfect network for us. The show will be a fresh take on the franchise, allowing us to explore Chucky’s character with a depth that is uniquely afforded by the television series format, while staying true to the original vision that has terrorized audiences for over three decades now.”
According to Deadline, Chris McCumber, President/Entertainment Networks had this to say about the deal:
“The character Don and David created has terrified audiences for over 30 years. The longevity and legacy of Chucky speaks to the creative storytelling and the loyal fans the film series has collected over the years. We are excited to once again partner with Nick and UCP on this new Syfy series, and are incredibly proud to bring Chucky to television for the first time with the original creators.”
This is excellent news for fans. Frankly, I feared that this project might never escape development Hell. I’m happy to have been wrong. We’re definitely looking forward to checking this out!
Final Thoughts
This is great news. It will be interesting to see how much they can get away with on SyFy as far as language and gore. I don’t usually think of Chucky as a TV friendly character, so Mancini and Co. will have their work cut out for them. I have full confidence in them to pull it off, however. If anyone knows the source material and the fans, it’s these guys.
We’ll bring you more info about the series as we get it. Who’s going to star? Who’s going to voice Chucky? There will be lots to share once filming starts!
