Blumhouse’s $2 Billion Milestone Proves Horror is Big Business

Blumhouse was established on a fairly simple model with simple aspirations: Produce inexpensive horror movies while offering filmmakers creative freedom. It was a system that turned a small, scrappy production company into a genre powerhouse. Blumhouse went from releasing promising indies to some of the biggest, most popular movies in the biz.

Their catalog’s most popular and profitable films include: The Paranormal Activity franchise, the Insidious franchise, and The Purge franchise. They’re also the studio behind the Ouija franchise (with Part 2, Ouija: Origin Of Evil, being released this weekend).  Other popular Blumhouse films include: The Visit, The Green Inferno, Unfriended, and The Gallows.

Yesterday, Deadline reported that Blumhouse had hit an impressive milestone: Their films have grossed a combined $2 Billion-plus at the box office, proving horror is big business, and our beloved genre has never been more popular:

Two days before its Ouija: Origin Of Evil opens to an estimated $15 million and hogs up all the Halloween horror business, microbudget maestro Blumhouse has announced that the company has surpassed the $2 billion threshold at the global box office. Catapulting the label past that point was its Universal/Platinum Dunes release The Purge: Election Year, which recently became the highest-grossing chapter in that R-rated horror series with $118.9M.

Blumhouse is hitting the milestone at a time when horror films have had quite a heyday at the multiplex. In addition to Election Year, Screen Gems saw their highest-grossing spooky flick of all time with Fede Alvarez’s Don’t Breathe at $88.2M, while Warner Bros/New Line has profited from Conjuring 2 and Lights Out.

Congratulations to trailblazer and CEO Jason Blum and everyone at Blumhouse! We look forward to many more years of quality, terrifying horror movies!
