Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai

WarnerMedia Orders Up Animated ‘Gremlins’ Prequel Series

What’s old is new again. Such is the case for a number of 80’s and 90’s television and film properties returning to cinemas and television lately. Joe Dante’s Gremlins (1984) appears to be the next in line!  Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai is in development and was just ordered to series according to The Hollywood Reporter. What’s it all about? Where can you watch it?

Read on for the details!

Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai Synopsis

The series is set in Shanghai in the 1920s and reveals the story of how 10-year-old Sam Wing (future shop owner Mr. Wing in the 1984 feature film) met the young Mogwai called Gizmo. Along with a teenage street thief named Elle, Sam and Gizmo take a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside, encountering, and sometimes battling, colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore. On their quest to return Gizmo to his family and uncover a legendary treasure, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins.

Tze Chun (Gotham) will write the series. It looks like the order is for 10 episodes. The plan is to launch the show as part of Warner’s new, “yet to be named” streaming service. That service will launch (in theory) later in 2019. Interesting side note: WarnerMedia also controls the DC Universe streaming service. You’ll remember they recently cancelled Swamp Thing. We don’t know yet how those two services will interact or share content (if at all).

Final Thoughts

IMDB doesn’t have much to say so far. Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai likely won’t be a launch title.  Smart money is on a 2020 release date. We’ll certainly bring you more info as we get it, including the cast list, trailer, official release date, etc.

What do you think? Will you watch a Gremlins animated series? Do you plan to subscribe to WarnerMedia’s streaming service when it launches? Tell us in the comments!
